Legal recruitment for law firms Hire the lawyer who stays.
A bad hire in a law firm does not show up on one line of the P&L. It shows up as files that slip, a supervisor stretched thin and a partner redoing work at seven in the evening. We recruit so that does not happen.
Book a 30-minute discovery meeting
In short
Wilson Mannion recruits conveyancers, real estate lawyers and fee earners for UK law firms as well as qualified staff for a number of practice areas. You get a market read in writing before you pay for anything. You get a shortlist of fewer names, each with a note on why they suit your role. Terms are agreed in writing before we send a single CV.
The cost
What does a bad hire cost your firm?
Most firms count the recruitment fee and stop there. The bigger cost sits in everything around it.
How do we work with law firms?
Five steps, in the open. The screening standard in full.
- 1
Discovery meeting, 30 minutes.
The role, the team, who supervises, what you pay and what went wrong last time.
- 2
A market read, in writing.
Whether the people exist, what they cost and how long it takes. If the answer is bad news, you hear it now.
- 3
Search and screen.
We approach the whole market, not just the people on job boards, and spend 20 to 30 minutes on a screening call with every candidate, for each role. That conversation is also a pitch for your role and your firm, so they want the job before they have even met you. Every candidate goes through the standard on our screening page.
- 4
A shortlist with a note on each name.
Why this person, for this role. Fewer names than you expect, each one checked.
- 5
Interviews, offer and the notice period.
We stay in control throughout, so you know whether your process needs to speed up and whether your offer is competitive, and we get ahead of counter-offers. We stay in the middle until the new starter is at their desk.
What does it cost?
Terms are agreed in writing at the discovery meeting, before we send you a single CV.
Who do we work with?
Our clients include top 200 and Legal 500 firms, regional practices and high-street firms.
What firms say.
What's made it very easy for us to work with James is that he's been able to follow the brief. We've simply set a task, explain what we want to happen, and he's made it happen. What more could you want?
Martin Smith, Principal Solicitor, Vienna Kang Advocates
The volume of numbers that you've delivered, combined with the quality, is definitely up there in the top percentiles of what our partners have done this year.
Matt Darwell, Talent Attraction Partner, Movera
You listened to what the needs were, what your client, being us, needed, and what we were looking for in the candidates. I think that is probably one of the main reasons you were successful helping us with this project.
Mari Escalona, Simply Conveyancing
James recently filled a niche vacancy within the firm pulling out all the stops to do this quickly and efficiently. James has excellent communication skills, was always available to talk to and kept us informed of progress every step of the way.

The questions worth asking us.
Straight answers, the same ones we give in the room.
We have already tried advertising. Why would a recruiter do any better?
Most firms have, and an advert only reaches the people who are already looking. The lawyer you want is usually settled, busy and not on a job board. We approach the whole market, and we spend 20 to 30 minutes screening every candidate for the role, pitching your role and your firm so they want the job before they have even met you. Then we stay in control through to the offer, so you know whether your process needs to speed up, whether your offer is competitive, and we get ahead of counter-offers.
Recruiters send a pile of CVs and waste our time. Will you?
No. We send fewer names, each with a written note on why this person suits this role. If we cannot find someone who fits, we say so and stop. A shortlist is as long as the market justifies, not as long as looks impressive.
Do you understand conveyancing?
It is where most of our placements sit. We know the difference between a fee earner who thrives on high-volume residential and one who needs fewer, larger files. We know why a new build team needs different people from a high-street residential team, and what experience with your case management system is worth.
How fast can you fill the role?
It depends on the role. Some roles fill in weeks. A senior head of department can take months. After the first meeting you get a realistic timeline in writing, and if it starts slipping you hear about it from us first.
Do you place remote and hybrid roles?
Yes. Several of our current roles are hybrid or fully remote, and every advert shows the working pattern and the salary.
What will the lawyer cost us?
Ask for the market read in the discovery meeting. We also publish the salary on our adverts, so you can see what firms are paying right now.
What do you charge, and what happens if the hire leaves?
Terms are agreed in writing at the discovery meeting, before we send you a single CV.
We have been burned by recruiters before. Why would this be different?
Fair. Most firms who say that were sent a pile of CVs by someone who did not know the role. Test us. The first meeting is 30 minutes, and you get a market read in writing before you pay for anything. If the people are not out there at your figure, we say so.
What do you need from us at the first meeting?
The role: what the work is, how many files, who supervises. The team around it. The pay band you have approved. And what went wrong last time, because it tells us what to screen for.
How do we know the salary we are offering will work?
Tell us the band you have approved. We will tell you what it buys in the market today. Every advert we run shows the pay, so you can see for yourself what firms are offering right now.
Candidates drop out during their notice period. Can you stop that?
Not entirely, and nobody can. Notice periods are often long, so a lot can happen between a yes and a start date. We stay in the middle until the new starter is at their desk.
What types of legal roles do you recruit for?
Mostly conveyancing, development and new build, and commercial property and real estate, from assistants and fee earners to heads of department and partners. We also recruit in private client, real estate and property litigation, and housing and regeneration, and across the wider legal market, including corporate and commercial, when a firm needs it.
How do you find and assess candidates?
We approach the whole market, not just the people on job boards. Every candidate has a screening conversation of 20 to 30 minutes for each role, where we find out what they want, check their track record and see whether they would really suit your role. We check their track record and practising status, and nothing is sent without the candidate's consent. The whole standard is on our How we screen page.
What makes Wilson Mannion different from other legal recruiters?
Our deep sector knowledge, active listening and commitment to customer service, shown by our reviews, as well as our ability to effectively sell your role and company so candidates actually want the job before they even meet you. We tell you what we think, even when it isn’t what you expected to hear, and we treat every placement as the start of a long-term relationship.
How quickly can you provide a shortlist?
It depends on the role and on how many suitable lawyers there are in your market. After the discovery meeting you get a written timeline, including when to expect the first shortlist, and if it starts slipping you hear it from us first. We would rather send fewer names that are right than more names that are fast.
What happens if a placement does not work out?
Whilst we have a 93% retention rate on placements after three months (measured in 2024), we allow for when things go wrong by providing a rebate period during the first couple of months, where you can recover some of the cost. If possible, we look to find a suitable replacement instead.
